The Canada-based director's father passed away, leaving her mother a widow. "I just want to leave Water behind," said Deepa Mehta. "That phase is behind me." Ever since the Oscar buzz has died down and Water's receded, few noticed that the reclusive director had quietly slipped into the country around the time of the film's Indian release. Not for press events, but to spend time with her Delhi-based parents. Sadly, Deepa has, for the past three weeks, been dealing with the subject of widowhood (her subject in Water) that has unfortunately come home to roost. "My father passed away three weeks ago," said Deepa, who is still coping with the trauma of the loss, and only just went back to Canada after completing all rites and ceremonies pertaining to the demise. "My focus is now my mother. I've brought her back with me, and I hope the healing begins for both of us. I can't get back to work right now. It's too traumatic. Just healing," she said.
